Salesforce Admin Exam (2026): What the Exam Really Tests

By John Harris · 2026-10-04

If you're studying for the Salesforce Admin exam this year, its official name is Salesforce Certified Platform Administrator, and the version you'll sit was last refreshed on December 15, 2025. That refresh added an Agentforce section worth 8% of the exam and adjusted how the other topics are weighted.

There's one detail most study guides skip. The exam guide says the questions align to Summer '25. Salesforce has shipped several releases since then, and Winter '27 finished reaching production orgs on October 9, 2026. So the exam tests a version of the platform that's more than a year behind the org you log into at work. We'll come back to why that matters.

Everything below was checked against the official exam guide on October 4, 2026. Where we couldn't confirm something from an official Salesforce source, we left it out.

The exam at a glance

  • 60 multiple-choice questions, plus up to 5 unscored questions mixed in at random. You won't know which ones they are.

  • 105 minutes.

  • Passing score: 68% for the English version, 65% for Japanese.

  • US$200 to register, US$100 to retake, plus local taxes.

  • No prerequisite. Salesforce recommends 6 or more months of hands-on admin experience.

  • Taken at a test center or online with a proctor. No notes or online materials allowed.

  • Questions align to Summer '25.

68% of 60 is roughly 41 correct answers. Put the other way, you can miss about 19 and still pass. That sounds like plenty of room, until one weak section uses up most of it.

Salesforce publishes percentages, not question counts, so the right-hand column is an estimate.

The largest block is Data and Analytics Management. It's tempting to treat reports and dashboards as the easy part and skim them. The objectives say otherwise: data import and export, duplicate and matching rules, validation rules, report types, joined reports, bucket fields, how sharing affects what a report shows, and dashboard options like dynamic dashboards and their licensing limits. That's a lot of small, testable detail.

Configuration and Setup, Object Manager and Automation come next at 15% each. Together with Data and Analytics, those four sections are 62% of the exam. If your study time is limited, that's where it goes first.

The Agentforce section (8%)

The guide lists two objectives:

  • The capabilities and use cases of Agentforce: when it's appropriate to use AI, security, and troubleshooting agent permissions.

  • How to maintain, update or install prompts and instructions in Agent Builder, including light testing and conversation preview.

Eight percent is about five questions. Writing about the refresh, the Salesforce Admins blog says plainly that this doesn't mean you're expected to be an Agentforce expert.

Look at the shape of those objectives. They're admin questions that happen to be about AI: who can use an agent, why an agent isn't doing what it should, where you change its instructions, and how you test a change before users see it. If you've managed permissions and tested a flow before, you already think this way.

One vocabulary warning. The exam guide calls the tool Agent Builder. Current Salesforce Help documents a newer Agentforce Builder alongside a "Legacy Agentforce Builder", and uses newer terms such as subagents. Because the exam is pinned to Summer '25, expect its wording to follow the guide. When a tutorial and the guide use different names for the same thing, learn both.

Automation means Flow

The Automation section covers three things. The first is choosing the right automation tool, with escalation rules, case and lead assignment rules, the default automation user and AI named as examples. The second is Flow: screen flows, record-triggered flows, autolaunched flows and order of execution. The third is approval processes.

Workflow Rules and Process Builder don't appear in the objectives, which matches the platform. Salesforce ended support for both on December 31, 2025. Existing rules and processes keep running, but there's no customer support and no bug fixes, and Salesforce recommends moving to Flow Builder. If your notes still teach you how to build a workflow rule, treat that chapter as history.

Order of execution is the objective worth getting exactly right. A record-triggered flow set to run before the record is saved runs before any before-trigger Apex. It's easy to get backwards, and it's the kind of detail a scenario question turns on.

What's still on the Admin exam

When the Platform App Builder exam was refreshed in August 2026, Chatter and Schema Builder dropped out of its objectives. Both are still on the Admin exam. Productivity and Collaboration lists Chatter features (groups, access to groups, internal and external users). Object Manager lists Schema Builder alongside relationships and record types.

If you're studying for both certifications, don't let one exam's changes edit your notes for the other. We covered the App Builder refresh in Platform App Builder Exam Changes (August 2026).

One more detail: the AppExchange objective also mentions prompts on AgentExchange.

Why "aligns to Summer '25" matters

Salesforce ships three releases a year, and your exam is fixed to one of them. When the platform you use at work and the exam disagree, the exam's release is the one that counts on exam day.

Two habits help:

  • Before you trust a study resource, check which version of the guide it was written for. Material built for an older outline can weight things wrong. Material written about the newest release can use names the exam doesn't.

  • Re-open the official guide before you book. Outlines do change. The App Builder exam got new weights and a higher passing score in August 2026.

How to split your study time

  1. Start with the four big sections: Data and Analytics, Configuration and Setup, Object Manager, and Automation. Do them hands-on in a free Developer Edition org or a Trailhead Playground, not just from reading.

  2. Learn the sharing model properly. It sits in Configuration and Setup (org-wide defaults, the role hierarchy, public groups, profiles, permission sets, permission set groups and muting) and comes back in Data and Analytics, where sharing decides what a report shows. One topic, two sections.

  3. Treat the three 10% sections as breadth. Sales, Service and Productivity mostly ask you to describe and identify features, so know what each one does and when you'd reach for it.

  4. Give Agentforce a fixed, small slice. Cover the two objectives and move on.

  5. Practice under time pressure. 105 minutes for up to 65 questions is about a minute and a half per question.

Salesforce's own recommended self-study for this exam is a Trailmix plus two superbadges: Object Relationships and Flow Administration. Both line up with heavily weighted sections, so they're worth the time.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a prerequisite for the Salesforce Admin exam?

No. Salesforce recommends at least 6 months of experience as an admin, but it isn't required.

What's the passing score?

68% for the English version and 65% for the Japanese version.

Does the Admin exam cover Agentforce?

Yes. Agentforce is its own section worth 8%, about five questions. It covers when AI is the right fit, security, agent permissions, and maintaining prompts and instructions in Agent Builder.

Are Workflow Rules and Process Builder on the exam?

They aren't in the objectives. Automation covers choosing the right tool, Flow, and approval processes.

How do I keep the certification once I pass?

Complete the Platform Administrator maintenance badge on Trailhead once a year. If you miss the due date, the certification expires.

I failed. What now?

A retake costs US$100. Before you rebook, read your section results against the weights above. We wrote a full guide: Failed a Salesforce Certification? Here's What to Do Next.
