Platform App Builder Exam Changes (Aug 2026): 73% Pass Score

By John Harris · 2026-08-25

On August 21, 2026, Salesforce refreshed the Platform App Builder certification exam to align with the Summer '26 release. This wasn't a cosmetic update. The passing score rose from 63% to 73%, every section weight changed, one topic family (Agentforce) entered the objectives, and some long-standing objectives quietly left.

If you're preparing with notes, courses, or question banks built before August 21, they now describe an exam that no longer exists. Here is everything that changed, verified directly against the official Salesforce exam guide - not summarized from someone else's summary.

The exam format itself is unchanged: 60 scored multiple-choice questions, up to five unscored questions, 105 minutes, $200 USD registration, $100 USD retake, no prerequisite.

The headline: a 73% passing score

The passing score moved from 63% to 73%. On a 60-question exam, that's the difference between needing roughly 38 correct answers and needing roughly 44. Six extra questions is not rounding error - it's the margin that used to absorb your weak section.

Practically, this changes how you should judge your readiness. Under the old bar, many candidates booked the exam while still shaky in one area, trusting their strong sections to carry them. At 73%, there is far less room to carry anything. A weak section now has to be repaired before exam day, not compensated for during it.

Business Logic is now a third of the exam - and it speaks Flow and Agentforce

Business Logic and Process Automation grew to 32%, and its objectives were rewritten in the language of the current platform. The refreshed outline explicitly covers building and configuring flows in Flow Builder, choosing the right flow type for a requirement, maintaining, monitoring, and troubleshooting flows, Flow Approval processes, and - new to this exam - using Agentforce to automate business processes.

Two things follow from that list. First, classic workflow-era knowledge is no longer the center of gravity: the exam expects working fluency with Flow Builder, not just awareness of it. Second, approval processes are now framed through Flow Approvals rather than the legacy approval setup, so if your notes describe the old approval wizard, update them.

One more small but telling edit: where the old objectives said AppExchange, the new guide says AgentExchange. One word, and a clear signal of where Salesforce is pointing the platform.

What shrank, what moved, what disappeared

Salesforce Fundamentals dropped from 23% to 18% and slimmed down: the mobile-experience objective moved out of Fundamentals into the User Interface section, and the old Chatter objective is gone from the outline entirely.

Data Modeling and Management eased to 20%, and the objective on Schema Builder no longer appears - the remaining objectives focus on choosing data models, relationship types and their implications, field type considerations, and import/export options.

User Interface absorbed the mobile objective (global and object-specific actions and layouts for the Salesforce mobile experience), so its scope is slightly broader.

App Deployment rose from 10% to 13% - sandbox strategy, change sets, packages, and deployment planning now decide roughly one question in eight.

One change beyond the exam itself: certification maintenance for App Builder is now once a year, down from the previous three-times-a-year cycle.

What this means for your study plan

Read the weights as a study budget. Under the new distribution, automation is where the exam is won: one question in three comes from Business Logic and Process Automation. If your Flow skills are the weak spot, that section alone will decide your result - at a 73% bar, a 50% performance in a 32% section is nearly unrecoverable.

The efficient plan for the refreshed exam looks like this: spend the largest share of your time building and debugging flows (including approval flows) in a hands-on org, get comfortable explaining when an agent or a flow is the right automation tool, keep data modeling sharp because 20% is still the second-largest block, and give deployment more respect than the old exam trained people to give it.

And before you trust any study resource - including this one - open the current official exam guide and check the outline yourself. The August refresh is the third significant certification change in twelve months, after the Administrator refresh in December 2025 and the renaming of 16 certifications in July. This catalog moves. The habit of re-checking the official guide is worth more than any single article.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to retake the exam if I'm already certified?

No. Existing Platform App Builder certifications remain valid. You keep your credential by completing the annual maintenance badge on Trailhead - which, as of this refresh, is required once a year instead of three times.

Is the exam harder now?

The bar is objectively higher: 73% instead of 63%, with more of the exam concentrated in automation scenarios. Whether it's harder for you depends on your Flow fluency. Candidates who build flows regularly may find the refreshed exam more aligned with their daily work than the old one.

I studied with pre-August materials. How much is unusable?

The core concepts - data modeling, security, declarative customization - are still the same platform. What's stale is the emphasis (section weights), the automation objectives (Flow Builder and Flow Approvals language, Agentforce), and anything covering Chatter or Schema Builder as exam topics. Recalibrate your time allocation before adding new material.

Where can I see the changes for myself?

Salesforce publishes the refreshed exam guide on its Help site. It's linked at the end of this article. Reading the outline against your notes takes ten minutes and is the single best prep-planning exercise available.

Practice against the current exam, not the old one

Our Platform App Builder practice course is built around the refreshed guide: 158 original scenario questions, with the most questions where the guide puts the most weight, and a full explanation for every option - including why each wrong answer is wrong, because at a 73% bar, elimination is a scoring skill.

It's €11.99 for full access, and the first five questions are free on the App Builder course page. If you want to see exactly how we write questions and explanations before spending anything, our complete Platform Administrator course - 163 questions - is free, no card required.
